Stranger Things

news about the debut feature film by Eleanor Burke and Ron Eyal

Excellent review of “Stranger Things”

Matthew Connolly of the Times Herald-Record, who saw “Stranger Things” at Woodstock, has given it an “excellent” rating in his review.

Connolly writes:

A nuanced and perfectly-proportioned character study, Stranger Things attunes itself to those small shifts in trust and temperament that occur when two strangers first discover a shared connection. Here, that recognition becomes complicated by economic and social positions, and writer-director’s Eleanor Burke and Ron Eyal find many prickly and uncomfortable moments between their characters along with sweet-tempered ones. Such subtle emotional fluctuations fill the film’s 77 minutes, which pass by with the melancholy softness of a late summer breeze.

Filmmaker Magazine on Woodstock Win

Scott Macaulay has posted a mention of our Woodstock Best Feature Award on the Filmmaker Magazine blog. Scott picked us for the 25 New Faces of Independent Film list in 2009 after seeing a cut at the IFP Independent Filmmaker Lab.

He writes about “Stranger Things”:

This is a beautiful, delicate, and extremely well directed and acted film.

Not-to-be missed!

Looking for another reason to see “Stranger Things” at the 2010 Woodstock Film Festival? We were recently listed as one of ten not-to-be-missed picks of the festival by WFF Festival Director Meira Blaustein.

Blaustein describes why “Stranger Things” made the list:

“The tempo, the way the film moves is beautiful. Somehow, they created a movie that is magical when you see it.”

Tickets are still available online for our Friday October 1st, 2pm and Sunday October 3rd 1:30pm screenings. We hope to see you there.

“Stranger Things” is a “Mesmerizing Piece of Cinema”

Greg Olear lists Stranger Things as one of the highlights of this year’s Woodstock Film Festival in his article Groovy Movie, Take Two: The Woodstock Film Festival Shines On. Olear says:

You’ve probably never heard of Eleanor Burke and Ron Eyal, the British filmmaking team who made this mesmerizing piece of cinema, but you will. This is a chance to watch their much-buzzed-about debut on a big screen before they “go Hollywood.”

Commandments for Ultra-Independent Filmmaking

Ted Hope posted a list of “No-Budget Commandments” on Truly Free Film yesterday, which he put together with his colleagues when his production company, The Good Machine, was starting out. It’s interesting to see how many of these we abided by when making Stranger Things without ever having encountered the list or even many people who think along these lines.

Adeel Akhtar (Mani) between takes, STRANGER THINGS

Bridget Collins (Oona) on location, STRANGER THINGS

Some of the principles we followed included writing to direct and writing for what we knew and what we could obtain. Writing for our location and for our actors also helped us enormously with co-directing, as we hadn’t imagined up vastly different versions of the characters or locations from each other. We knew we had to be flexible filmmakers and we always wanted to make an intimate film, so that one came easily. For anyone planning to make an independent film without a huge amount of money behind them, I would definitely recommend checking out the full list of commandments.

“Stranger Things” wins IFP Lab Finishing Award Package!

Amazing news! Eleanor and I are very happy and proud to announce that Stranger Things has won the IFP Narrative Lab’s Finishing Grant! The award is a package of services worth $45,000, including post-production services from Goldcrest Post New York, post-graphic services from Edgeworx, Inc., legal consultation from Gray Krauss LLP, publicity consultation from International House of Publicity, test screening space courtesy of The Tank, and promotional materials from 4over4.

This award make an enormous difference to us in finishing Stranger Things. First time feature filmmakers: IFP Filmmaker Lab open for entries

Christina Beck and Annette Murphy (Perfection) get feedback on their cut from editors Kate Williams and Sabine Hoffmann, in the 2009 IFP Lab

The IFP Filmmaker Lab is accepting applications. This is an amazing opportunity for all you first-time feature filmmakers out there. Eleanor and I participated in the 2009 Lab last summer and it was an incredible experience – it made an enormous difference to how we’ve approached finishing our film Stranger Things. During the course of the lab, we got advice from some amazing mentors (indie producers Scott Macaulay, Gretchen McGowan, and Anish Savjani, editor Brian Kates, new media genius Lance Weiler, just to name a few…).

There’s one lab for narrative films and one for docs. Each section accepts 10 films. Applications are due February 12 (for documentary) & March 26 (for narrative), so hurry up and apply!

Happy New Year from the “Stranger Things” team!

Wishing all of our supporters, fans, cast and crew a fantastic new year. Thank you all so much for your support over the last year. We’re looking forward to exciting new developments with the film in 2010.

Congratulations to Christina Beck

Congratulations to our IFP lab-mate Christina Beck, who was just awarded the Adrienne Shelly Foundation’s female directing grant for her wonderful film Perfection.  Christina came to New York to receive her award, which gave us the chance to catch up over drinks — with Melissa and Michael from the Lab too.IFP Alumni meet up for drinks

Paramount to start micro-budget film division

According to the L.A. Times, Paramount is launching a new production business for films budgeted at less than $100,000. Apparently they’ll be financing 20 or so films per year, which sounds like good news for independent filmmakers! Unfortunately they won’t be acquiring completed films like ours, but who knows for the next one!
