Film Festival Today Interview

Here’s one more interview from our Slamdance coverage. This one is with Luis Pedron from Film Festival Today. He had a lot of meaty questions for us about the themes behind the film and about the production, and he said that Bridget Collins reminded him of Imelda Staunton.

What Meets the Eye

While we were in Park City we were interviewed for the Edmonton Journal by Ashley Elaine York. She wrote a very nice piece about Stranger Things, which she chose as her favorite film of Slamdance 2011. She was particularly excited by the cinematography, describing the camera as a character in its own right.

Actually, Ashley Elaine York wasn’t the only person to pick up on strong cinematic storytelling Eleanor achieved with the camera. Filmmaker Magazine also mentioned the film’s beauty and in Variety’s review of Stranger Things, John Anderson pointed out “Burke’s intuitive, expressive camera work.”

To seal the deal, the great cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond (who shot The Deer Hunter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and McCabe and Mrs Miller among others) was at one of our Slamdance screenings. We were honored when he talked to us afterwards and spoke highly of the cinematography.

Luckily Eleanor is a humble gal. She ought to be unbearable by now.

Sound on Sight Interview

The film blog, Sound On Sight, interviewed the two of us just before the Slamdance Awards. They also seemed to be very interested in how we work as a couple!

Filmmaker Mag’s “Gems from the Other Festival”

Following Thursday’s Grand Jury Prize win at Slamdance, Filmmaker Magazine has spotlighted Stranger Things in the “Park City Critic’s Notebook.”

Filmmaker’s Bradon Harris describes the film as “elegant and evocative” and “as tranquil and refreshing as an autumn afternoon along the rural British coast.”

Slamdance Win!

We’re so pleased to announce that Stranger Things has won the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival! The award ceremony took place last night at the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City in the main screening room. We were awarded a “Sparky” — Slamdance’s bronze dog-shaped award. Best documentary went to Bhopali by Van Maximillian Carlson.

Ron and I are delighted and very grateful to the jury, to Slamdance and to everyone who has helped us along the way. Thanks to all of you for the messages of support.

“Stranger Things”: An Absolute Must See

Gordon and the Whale, the movie blog, has reviewed Stranger Things and has some incredibly glowing things to say about the film. The reviewer, Joshua Brunstein, wasn’t entirely satisfied by the ending, but on the other hand, calls the film “an absolute must see feature” and particularly praises the lead performances.

[Oona is] played wonderfully by Bridget Collins. She gives one of the most fantastic performances of the past 12 months, that is both hauntingly real, and without any artifice or sentimentality. It’s a wonderfully understated performance, that is paired perfectly with her partner in crime, Mani, played by FOUR LIONS’ Adeel Akhtar. Both are the epitome of understated performances.

Variety Review for “Stranger Things”

We are excited to announce that Stranger Things has received a great review from Variety. Adeel Akhtar and Bridget Collins receive praise for their intelligent performances and the film is called delicate, dignified and soulful. Here’s an extract:

Shot on the English seaside and with a Dreyer-esque instinct for the complexity and frankness of the human face, the pic is essentially a two-hander, its action muted and its pretensions modest. At the same time, its theme — the capacity of the heart to make connections, under odd and unlikely circumstances — harbors something titanic. Much of this is conveyed via the directors’ appreciation for revealing detail, and eloquent gesture.

First Day in Park City

We’ve arrived in frosty Park City, Utah and are busy getting everything ready for Slamdance. We checked in at Filmmaker Registration this morning and put up our posters at the Treasure Mountain Inn a.k.a Slamdance HQ. We were there early and so were able to nab a great spot.

Lindsay MacKay, our production manager on Stranger Things, is here with us to join in the fun and to help us keep on top of everything at the festival.

Our first screening is tomorrow at 12:30pm. We hope to see you there! Click here for more info.
